Harpoon is a project of Tina Hitchens and Aron Ward that utilises drum machines and stomp boxes to full effect.
'Permission Fist' is their mighty new work for Aphelion Editions, a head-spinning vortex of lean, brutalist, interlocking composition and hyperkinetic rhythm study, honing years of live improvisation into a thrill-ride of texture and sound that feels equally at home on your headphones in a darkened room as it would coming to you via a robust PA in a sweaty basement venue (eg. precisely how and where this beast was released).
Body music to rewire your head.
"Distortion-larded, acid-adjacent synths loop at an impasse, like a remote control car being repeatedly guided into a wall; on ‘Useless Third’ it sounds like it’s going to go completely to pieces before a thick seam of midrange and a brain-stabbing cowbell swoops in, and by the five-minute mark fists are pumping..." NOEL GARDNER, THE QUIETUS
"...one notch up, perhaps, is the use of a drum machine (or two) and stomp boxes; distortion, pitch shifters, phasers, flangers or whatever else is available in this department of rainbow coloured apparatus. This sort of set-up I would think is at the core of the duo named Harpoon... ...their music works best if you allow it to have some volume... Very nice release altogether..." FRANS DE WAARD, VITAL WEEKLY 1188
"Permission Fist is the result of a collaboration between Tina Hitchens and Aron Ward entitled Harpoon. Constructed mainly from drum machines and guitar effects pedals, it’s a pretty brutal and physical experience but a stimulating one!" NORMAN RECORDS
